A Luton home was left ruined by flames yesterday after the door of a log burner fire was left open.

An ember was spat on to the sofa, causing it to ignite and resulting in serious damage to the ground floor.

A Beds Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "We used four breathing apparatus with two hose reel jets to search the property, extinguish the fire, and clear smoke, again with the fan.

Earlier that day, the crew attended another house fire in Lilac Grove, in which a wall-mounted heater melted in the bathroom, causing smoke logging.

This was extinguished and smoke cleared using the fan.
