The Linden Academy: pupils, teachers and parents celebrate Earth Day at Luton school
Pupils and staff across the school enjoyed spending time outside the classroom, raising awareness of Earth Day to help make the world a happier and healthier place to live.
Children were able to visit The Linden Academy Wildlife Garden and help with weeding, tidying and planting seeds in the flower beds. They also got to visit the school pond, with the exciting addition of tadpoles!
Reducing the school’s carbon footprint was the theme of the day. The school’s Eco Ambassadors came up with the idea of shutting down the photocopiers for the day to support this.
During the day, each year group had their own activity to complete:
Reception made an Earth Day Collage using tissue paper.
Year 1 constructed a homemade Bird feeder, using Cheerios, glue and string.
Year 2 made bird feeders using bird seeds, lard, string, toilet rolls and egg cartons.
Year 3 recycled plastic bottles and cans, tissue paper and coloured cards, as well as sequins to make pencil holders.
Year 4 used plastic bottles, sticks and twigs to build a bug hotel.
Year 5 made a terrarium with plastic bottles, soil and seeds.
Year 6 produced a hanging garden from plastic bottles, string and newspaper.
Parents were also invited in to help dig the garden and plant seeds and the school had help from a teacher's parent who came in with their spades and gardening equipment to help.
Michelle Woodhams, head of school, said: “We thoroughly enjoyed our Earth Day here at The Linden Academy. A fantastic day where children were able to spend more time outside, and take part in activities to help nature. Days like these are really special to us here as they encourage pupils to think outside the box and explore new ideas.”
